Elevation Beer Company Prostator Smoked Doppelbock

With the September shipment from the Michael Jackson Rare Beer of the Month Club, I received a bottle of the Elevation Beer Company Prostator Smoked Doppelbock that benefits Pints for Prostates. The beer pours a dark brown color with a foamy cream colored head that leaves a thin lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of smoke, barbecue, raisin, caramel, and malts. The taste is smoky and smooth at the same time which is remarkable. There is some raisin, malts, and caramel flavors that make up the base before a wonderful smoke content comes into play and dry out the flavor. It brings along with it some barbecue flavors and charred coals. The alcohol content is 7.5% ABV. I really liked the smoke addition to a strong a chewy beer style that really balances out the beer very well.

Duck-Rabbit Duck-Rabbator Doppelbock

Another beer I received at a beer pairing dinner at The Black Gryphon in Elizabethtown was the Duck-Rabbit Duck-Rabbator Doppelbock. The beer pours a dark amber/brown color with a thin bubbly off-white colored head. The aroma consists of caramel, raisin, fig, malt, grass. The taste is bold with burnt caramel, toasted toffee, and raisin. The finish has a dry malt flavor with some grass and pepper accents. The alcohol content is 8.5% ABV. This had some great flavors associated with it, and it was balanced quite exceptionally well. There was just enough spices to dull down the powerful sweetness in the beer, and it was more than enjoyable to drink.

Brewworks Elongator

Another beer I ordered on a recent visit the the Brewworks in Allentown was the Elongator, a doppelbock. The beer pours a copper color with a thin and filmy beige colored head. The aroma consists of caramel, bread, and toffee. The taste is smooth and sweet with a large caramel and toffee presence on the front end, and a toasted bread finish. A hint of grassy hops with pepper does show up on the finish, and an earthy after taste lingers. The alcohol content is 7.2% ABV. I thought this was a decent doppelbock, but it wasn’t too adventurous either. I’d definitely order another glass as I love the style, and I think it’s one of Brewworks better beers.

Karl Strauss Conquistador Doppelbock

Another beer I ordered while at the Karl Strauss Brewing restaurant in La Jolla, CA was the Conquistador Doppelbock. The beer pours a red amber color with a thin filmy white head. The aroma consists of cherry, wheat, and sweet malts. The taste is malty and smooth, actually it is very malty, with a cherry accent. It has a lightly dry dry finish with lots bubbles on the tongue. The alcohol content is 8.0% ABV. Overall, the Conquistador was a pretty decent beer. The cherry accent is what really drew me into liking it so much, and the carbonation kept it light on the tongue.
