Voodoo Headless Horseman

I was lucky to get the opportunity to try a glass of Voodoo Headless Horseman at Al’s of Hampden. Voodoo was pressured and caved to creating a pumpkin beer, and this was their offering. The beer pours a dark brown color with a bubbly tan head. When smelling the beer, all I could think of was “Holy Cinnamon, Batman!” with hints of pumpkin bread, raisin, fig, and allspice. The taste is sweet and dry with tons of cinnamon taking focus. There is some caramel, molasses, raisin, nutmeg fig, and hints of pumpkin linger in the finish. The alcohol content is 8.2% ABV. If you are a fan of the spices that are found in pumpkin beers, this is one for you. If you like the sweeter pumpkin flavor, you may want to shy away from it, as it is spice heaven. I personally loved it, but I also enjoy the abuse that tons of cinnamon and nutmeg can put your mouth through, and I thought there was just enough raisin, fig, and pumpkin sweetness to give a solid base.

Voodoo Wynona's Big Brown Ale

I picked up a bottle of Voodoo Wynona’s Big Brown Ale from Wegman’s and decided to share it with my buddy Matt. The beer pours a dark brown color with a frothy tan head that laces to the glass. The aroma consists of brown sugar, toasted malts, caramel, and cinnamon. The taste is dry and slightly bitter with plenty of toasted malts. Brown sugar is entrenched pretty well in the flavor mix that provides a good balance to the dry and toasted malts. The alcohol content is 7.3% ABV. This was an intense and well flavored brown ale, and if more of this style tasted this way, I think it would be a more popular style.

Voodoo Trapped Under Eisbock

I scored a bottle of Voodoo Trapped Under Eisbock from Al’s of Hampden and I decided to share it with some friends. The beer pours a dark amber color with a thin filmy white head. The aroma is malty and oaky with slight hints of cherry hiding in the background. The taste is smooth and malty with lots of raisin, malts, toffee, and caramel. There is a dry alcohol finish and an excellent cherry after taste that provides a nice twist to the beer, sweetening out the alcohol bite. The alcohol content is 14.0% ABV. Overall, Trapped Under Eisbock was a wonderful beer that stands above other eisbocks due to the oak aging and addition of cherries. I would like to see Voodoo make this beer once a year so that more people have the opportunity to try it.

Voodoo Black Magick

I was in Boston for Extreme Beer Fest when Al’s of Hampden released a case of Voodoo Black Magick, so I had my dad pick me up a bottle to try. The beer pours a deep black color with a thin filmy tan head. The aroma consists of lots of alcohol, chocolate, licorice, bourbon, and a hint of toasted malts. The taste is bold and takes over the mouth. Big on chocolate, this beer also contains some molasses and licorice. The alcohol kicks in with a warming bourbon finish, with hints of vanilla and caramel coming through in the after taste. The alcohol content is 15.5% ABV. Overall, this warming and delicious brew had a very bold profile with lots of chocolate, all finishing with a good bourbon kick to the tongue.

Voodoo Big Black Voodoo Daddy

I picked up a bottle of Voodoo Big Black Voodoo Daddy at Al’s of Hampden. The beer pours a black color with a bubbly tan head. The aroma consists of deep, dark chocolate with toasted malts and a light vanilla undertone. The taste is dry with dark chocolate that envelopes the mouth with some toasted malts, vanilla, and caramel flavors. The after taste is chocolaty with a great coffee accent that lingers around for a long time. The alcohol content is 12.5% ABV. This beer was perfectly crafted and balanced chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and toasted malts. While the chocolate is dry and dark, it is still silky smooth and quite delicious.

Voodoo Gran Met

I ordered a glass of Voodoo Gran Met at Al’s of Hampden, having had this beer only at a beer fest previously. The beer pours a golden color with a thin filmy white head. The aroma is sweet with lemon, butter, and fresh hops. The taste is light and malty with slightly sour malts on side of the mouth. There is a light butter and hop finish. The alcohol content is 10.5% ABV. The most surprising aspect of this beer is that there is no evidence of alcohol in the taste, especially given the high alcohol content. The Gran Met has a smooth profile and is an excellent beer to drink.

Voodoo Love Child

My girlfriend raved about the Voodoo Love Child that she had at a beer fest, and so she insisted on buying a bottle for me to try. The beer pours a golden color with light orange hues and a very lofty and foamy white head. The aroma consists a wheat base with cherry, raspberry, and a hint of sweet passion fruit. The taste is dry, light and bubbly with wheat on the bottom of a good sour cherry and raspberry kick. Some Belgian spices and yeast come up next with breadiness on the back of the mouth. On the finish, some passion fruit dries out the mouth a bit and leaves a passion fruit after taste. The alcohol content is 9.5% ABV. The Love Child was an excellent Belgian beer with good sour fruit accents that dry the mouth out nicely without being too dry.

Voodoo Brewery Pilzilla

I picked up a bottle of Voodoo Brewery Pilzilla from Al's of Hampden in Enola. The beer pours a golden color with a frothy white head. The aroma consists of sweet malts with a great hop accent rounding out the smell. There is light hints a butter cream and toffee. The taste is full of sweet malts on the front end with some butter and then turns into a nice hop accent. The beer finishes dry with a pine hop accent. The alcohol content is 7.0% ABV. What a great pilsner the Pilzilla turned out to be. It delivers the great pilsner taste with sweet malts and some butter accents with a wonderful hop twist on the end.
