Captain Lawrence Espresso Stout

Another growler my buddy Tim gave me in a beer trade was the Captain Lawrence Espresso Stout. The beer pours a black color with a frothy tan head that fades rather rapidly. The aroma consists of chocolate, espresso, coffee, vanilla, and toasted malts. The taste is dry and bitter with plenty of dark chocolate taking the focus. A dry coffee and espresso flavor takes over the mouth on the finish, and a touch of vanilla sweetness rounds out the flavor. The alcohol content is 6.0% ABV. I rather enjoyed this stout with its power coffee and espresso punch. It definitely focuses on the dry flavors, especially the dark chocolate flavors.

Appalachian Brewing Company Ragged Edge Espresso Stout

I stopped in to Appalachian Brewing Company on release day for the new Ragged Edge Espresso Stout. I previously have had the Cornerstone Espresso Stout, a one-off, and completely loved the beer. This version was made with coffee from Ragged Edge in Gettysburg. The beer pours a thick black color with frothy tan head. The aroma consists of dark chocolate and fresh espresso beans. The taste is dry and chocolate with lots of bitter coffee. The alcohol content is 4.6% ABV. While the Ragged Edge Espresso Stout was good, it was not quite as good as the Cornerstone Espresso Stout, and I really wish ABC would bring that one back.

Troegs Scratch 19- Espresso Stout

I slipped down to the Troegs Brewery today. I went to the growler filling station with my growler and was disappointed to find out that they were out of the Scratch 19- Espresso Stout. Since I made the 5-minute journey to the brewery, I decided to fill my growler with Troegenator. When I received my growler back, I asked the guy working how long ago they kicked the keg. He said that I missed it by about 20 minutes, but there should be some left available for samples only at the bar.

I immediately went to the bar to at least have a try of this anticipated Scratch Series beer. Fortunately for me, there was some beer left for sampling. The Espresso Stout has an excellent coffee aroma with a nice dark color. The flavor has a very strong coffee taste with a nutty accent and a slight bitter after taste. It has a full, robust taste that keeps the taste buds piqued. The alcohol content is 9.5%. I enjoyed the beer, but not quite as much as Appalachian Brewing Company's Espresso Stout. However, I am very disappointed that I could not get a full growler of Troegs Espresso Stout and hope that this recipe makes it's way around again on the scratch list again.

Appalachian Brewing Company- Espresso Stout

Last night I went back to Appalachian Brewing Company for dinner and the waitress told me that they had an Espresso Stout available. I had not previously tried the Espresso Stout, nor did I know that ABC made one. The flavor of the beer was excellent, crafting a nice blend of chocolate and espresso flavors. I had a few other beers throughout the night, but I came back to the Espresso Stout for my last beer, as I enjoyed it very much. It drinks very smooth, as anticipated for being a Stout. The flavors are not overpowering, but very complimentary and they make the drinking of the beer an enjoyable experience. I highly recommend going to ABC to try this beer today.
