Clipper City Heavy Seas Classic Lager

I picked up a bottle of Clipper City Heavy Seas Classic Lager from Brass Rail in Campbelltown. The beer pours a pale gold color with a thin filmy white head. The aroma consists of of sweet malts with hints of chocolate, caramel, and alcohol. The taste is big a malty with a good sweetness and a sour hop balance. Underneath is some hints at caramel and chocolate, which was a little surprising for a lager. The alcohol content is 5.0% ABV. I really enjoyed the Classic Lager in the Heavy Seas fleet, but I could see it being lumped in the somewhat too sweet category.

Clipper City Heavy Seas Marzen

I ordered a glass of Clipper City Heavy Seas Marzen from McGrath's in Harrisburg. The beer has a copper color with a light foamy head. There is a faint malty aroma. The tasty is malty and sweet with a healthy dose of caramel accents. The beer has a clean fresh finish with light hops. The alcohol content is 5.75% alcohol. I thought that this Marzen was a pretty clean beer with a great compliment of caramel, without being too sweet.

Clipper City Heavy Seas Winter Storm

I grabbed a bottle of Clipper City Heavy Seas Winter Storm at D's Six Pax and Dogz in Pittsburgh. The beer has an amber color with a white foamy head. It smells floral and hoppy. The taste is sweet and malty at first with caramel hints. It then turns to a lemony citrus flavor with a hop bite finish. I thought that this was a very well done beer with great hop accents. The alcohol content is 7.5% ABV. I really enjoyed this beer and thought the amount of hops put into the beer was perfect. It was very multidimensional and good.

Clipper City Heavy Seas Great Pumpkin

Albeit a little late and out of season, I picked up a bottle of Clipper City Heavy Seas Great Pumpkin at D's Six Pax and Dogz in Pittsburgh. This was one of the pumpkin beers that I really wanted to try but was unable to locate, until the end of December. The beer has an orange color with a light bubbly white head. The taste is very spicy and full of pumpkin, nutmeg, and cinnamon flavors. The alcohol content is 8.0% ABV. While this would not rank as my favorite pumpkin beer, it is a well done beer with none of the flavors overdone. This is the way a pumpkin beer should be produced.

Clipper City Heavy Seas Loose Cannon

The final (fourth) beer I had out of the Clipper City Heavy Seas sampler pack was Loose Cannon. It is described as hop-cubed ale, as it is a hoppy ale. It has a copper color and a very flowery aroma. The taste is all about the hops. It is sort of unrelenting in its hop bite, but has accent of citrus, most notably grapefruit. It has a crisp and slightly dry finish. The alcohol content is 7.0% ABV. Although this beer is very hoppy, the citrus accent makes it somewhat enjoyable. Be prepared for a hop kick in the tongue when trying this beer.

Clipper City Heavy Seas Small Craft Warning

Out of the Clipper City Heavy Seas sampler pack, the third beer I tried was the Small Craft Warning. This beer is labeled as an “Uber Pils.” For all of you It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans, when I read uber pils I think “pass, super pass, uber pass!” The beer is golden in color, cloudy and smells sweet with hints of lemon. The taste is slightly malty at first, and then the hops hit in the middle. It finishes a little dry with an accent of lemon and coriander. The alcohol content is 7.0% ABV. I thought that this was an excellent pilsner with fresh and crisp hop accents. It is very refreshing due to the lemon and coriander and not overly hoppy.

Clipper City Heavy Seas Peg Leg

The second beer that I tried from the Clipper City Heavy Seas sampler pack was the Peg Leg. The beer is dark brown in color with a light tan head. The aroma consists of roasted malts and dark chocolate. The taste is mostly dark chocolate with hints of roasted malts and coffee. From the aroma, I would have thought that the roasted malts would have been the front runner for taste, but it was the dark chocolate that came out as the winner. The alcohol content is 8.0% ABV. I really like the Peg Leg and like the dry dark chocolate finish.

Clipper City Heavy Seas Red Sky at Night

I picked up a four-pack sample of Clipper City's Heavy Seas brand. The Heavy Seas brand consists of Clipper City's higher alcohol content beer. My first beer out of the sampler pack was the Red Sky at Night, which is a saison. The beer is pale yellow in color with a light head. It has a sweet and fruity aroma. The taste is slightly peppery with lemon accents. The alcohol content is 7.5% ABV. I thought that the Red Sky at Night is an excellent saison with great fruit hints and spicy finish. After trying the whole pack (reviews yet to come), this was my favorite one in the pack.

Clipper City Marzhon

Prior to the Silversun Pickups, Manchester Orchestra, and Cage the Elephant concert in Baltimore, a group of us hit up Tir Na Nog Irish Pub. On draft, they had Clipper City MarzHon. The beer is gold in color and has a sweet aroma. The taste is sweet and malty, with an undertone of caramel. The after taste has a sweet bite to it. As for alcohol content, the MarzHon has a 5.25% ABV. I am a really big fan of this beer and I plan on getting some more of it. The sweet caramel taste is very satisfying and led me to order another beer during dinner.
