Coronado Black Perle Schwarzbier

My buddy Rich ordered a glass of Black Perle Schwarzbier for Coronado Brewing Company, and he let me sample it to review it. The beer pours a black color with a frothy tan head with some lacing left on the glass. The aroma consists of coffee, chocolate and toasted malts. The taste is mostly the toasted malts before a coffee finish. The mouthfeel is smooth with a light bite on the sides of the mouth. The alcohol content is 6.0% ABV. The Black Perle had a great robust flavor with wonderful coffee and toasted malt flavors.

Coronado El Chingon Hoppy Lager

While in San Diego, my friends and I stopped in to Coronado Brewing Company. The first beer I ordered was the El Chingon Hoppy Lager. The beer pours a golden color with a thin filmy white head. The aroma consists of lots of lemon and pine. The taste is smooth with malts before lemon seeds, pine, and orange come out to play on the tongue. The alcohol content is not available online but I would guess it to be around 5.5%ABV. The El Chingon was an amazing take on a lager and was also very refreshing. It's not too often you run into a very hoppy lager, but if you get the chance to find this beer, I would recommend picking it up, especially in the warmer months.

Coronado Islander IPA

I ordered a glass of Coronado Islander IPA from Al’s of Hampden. The beer pours a golden color with a lofty and frothy white head. The aroma consists of grapefruit, sugar, pine, and tangerine. The taste is bitter with lot of grapefruit up front before some sugar kicks in. Pine and tangerine come out to play on the finish which makes for a rather bittersweet taste. A very noticeable pepper bite attacks the back of the throat in the after taste. The alcohol content is 7% ABV. While I really enjoyed the pepper bite in the after taste, this may not be for everyone out there. The Islander IPA really knows how to take your palate on a wild ride from bitter citrus to sweet sugar and finally to a biting pepper.

Coronado Idiot IPA

While at Al's of Hampden, I ordered a glass of Coronado Idiot IPA. The beer pours a golden color with a thin filmy white head. The aroma consists of grapefruit, pine, and sugar. The taste is smooth and creamy with a very round mouth feel. There is lots of grapefruit in this beer, which gives it a rather sweet start with a bit of tangerine shining through before transitioning into a bitter pine finish. The alcohol content is 8% ABV. The Idiot IPA was an amazing beer and my ideal type of India Pale Ale. I love the grapefruit profile and the transition from sweet to bitter.

Coronado Mermaid's Red Ale

On a recent visit to Al's of Hampden, I ordered a glass of Coronado Mermaid's Red Ale. The beer pours a dark amber color with red hues and a thin bubbly white head. The aroma is lightly caramel but almost nonexistent. The taste was heavy on toasted malts with some caramel mixed in. The beer has a dry finish and a light pine hop bite. The alcohol content is 5.7% ABV. I thought that this was a decent red with good hop additions. There is a greater hop presence than I am used with red ales, but it was a welcome addition.

Coronado Red Devil

McGrath's had Coronado Red Devil on draft and I made a special trip there to try it. The beer has a dark amber color with light red hues and a bubbly tan head. It smells floral and hoppy and also has caramel and grapefruit aromas, The taste is smooth and malty with big hints of caramel and toffee. There is also a citrus undertone consisting of grapefruit and lemon. The alcohol content is 10% ABV. I thought that the Red Devil had an excellent taste. The caramel and toffee provided the right amount of sweetness and was balanced with the right amount of hops.
