Joboy's BrewPub BPA (Belgian Pale Ale)

On a recent trip to Joboy’s BrewPub in Manheim, PA, I ordered a glass of the BPA (Belgian Pale Ale). The beer pours a golden color with a frothy white colored head. The aroma consists of yeast, pepper, Belgian spices, banana, cloves, and grass. The taste is sweet and spicy at the same time with a good banana base with lemon accents. Pepper and Belgian spices accentuate the sweetness nicely and it has a grassy finish. The alcohol content is 4.5% ABV. I enjoyed this Belgian Pale Ale, as it was neither overly sweet or spicy, but very complimentary on both sides.

JoBoy's BrewPub Porter

Another beer I ordered on a recent trip to JoBoy’s BrewPub in Manheim was the Porter. The beer pours a black color with a frothy tan head. The aroma consists of toasted malts, caramel, and chocolate. The taste is chocolaty with toasted malts and a smooth caramel flavor that ties the beer together. Writing that note while drinking this beer made me think of “The Big Lebowski” and how the rug really tied the room together. The alcohol content is 6.2% ABV. The Porter had a great smooth and roasted flavor with plenty of caramel to put all the pieces together, even with a dry finish. The dude abides.

JoBoy's BrewPub German Altbier

Over the holiday break, I stopped in to JoBoy’s BrewPub for lunch with friends and I ordered a glass of the German Altbier. The beer pours a dark brown color with a bubbly tan head. The aroma consists of caramel, toasted malts, and biscuits. The taste is sweet with caramel, plenty of toasted flavors to dry and balance the sweetness, and a biscuity mouth feel. The alcohol content is 5.2% ABV. This was quite a dry beer, but it had good toasted flavor that wasn’t overly dry, balanced with just enough caramel sweetness.

JoBoy's Raspberry Summer Ale

One night for dinner, I went back to my favorite BBQ place JoBoy’s Brew Pub and I ordered their Raspberry Summer Ale as my first beer. Jeff, the owner/brewer, indicated that he took his normal Summer Ale and added raspberries for a refreshing take on the beer. The beer pours a hazy golden color with a thin filmy white head. The aroma is light and consists of wheat with a hint of raspberry. The taste is light and refreshing and is not too sweet or watered down, a trait of some raspberry beers. The alcohol content is 5.6% ABV. The mixing of the wheat and raspberry flavors was played out nicely without being too fruity of a beer, and this was quite a refreshing beverage.

JoBoy's German Wheat

Another beer I had at JoBoy’s Brew Pub in Manheim was the German Wheat (sorry for the lack of a picture- I apparently did not take one). The beer pours a golden orange color with a frothy white head. The aroma consists of wheat, orange, lemon, and pepper. The taste is smooth and full of orange with a light wheat base and a strong pepper accent. The pepper bite carries through the finish and dries out the mouth a little bit. The alcohol content is 5.9% ABV. The German Wheat had a great citrus and spice balance and is definitely worth ordering another.

JoBoy's BrewPub Barleywine

On my way home from the Central Pennsylvania bottle share event, I stopped in to JoBoy's BrewPub to pick up take-out food, and decided to try the Barleywine while waiting on the food. The beer pours a dark amber color with a frothy off-white head. The aroma consists of raisin, malts, caramel, and alcohol. The taste is smooth but bites on the sides of the mouth. Caramel and raisin flavors are prevalent with a light pine and lemon hop bite. The is a nice warming alcohol burn on the finish. The alcohol content is 9.0% ABV. JoBoys created quite a delicious barleywine that balances biting hops and sweet raisin and caramel flavors, a feat that is paramount for all barleywines.

JoBoy's BrewPub Hopblack

I took a trip to JoBoy’s BrewPub in Manheim for dinner with friends, and was excited to see that Hopblack was on the menu, a Black IPA. The beer pours a black color with a finger-width foamy off-white head. The aroma consists of pine and citrus hops with coffee, chocolate and molasses. There is a bit of a toasted malt backbone in the aroma as well. The taste is smooth and large with a roasty and smoky flavor, chocolate and a solid coffee base. There is a pine hop bite that is subtle on the finish. The alcohol content is 5.6% ABV. The Hopblack was a wonderful beer with great smoke flavor induced, all without overpowering the chocolate and malt base of the beer. And most importantly, there is a nice helping of pine hops.

JoBoy's BrewPub Manheim Red

The second beer I had from JoBoy's BrewPub in Manheim was the Manheim Red. The beer pours a red amber color with a lofty frothy white head. The aroma is sweet and malty with caramel. The taste is big and sweet with lots of caramel and a good bitter hop bite on the sides of the mouth. The alcohol content is 5.25% ABV. I really enjoyed the Manheim Red and thought as far as the style that this was a great red with lots of hops and malts for malt lovers and hop heads.

As for the food, let the photo of the sampler platter wet your appetite:

JoBoy's BrewPub American IPA

I stopped into JoBoy's BrewPub in Manheim because my girlfriend wanted to take me there (perfect night out). The first beer I ordered following extensive research on the website was the American IPA. The beer pours a golden orange color that is opaque with a frothy white head. The aroma consists of lemon, pine, orange, grapefruit, and caramel. The taste has a solid caramel base with a good lemon and grapefruit accent. There is an excellent helping of pine on the finish and a bitter after taste. Delightfully, there is some orange zest left to linger in the mouth. The alcohol content is 6.5% ABV. I thought the American IPA was a really good IPA, up there with some of the best, with an excellent hop bite. I wasn't expecting the unfiltered appearance, but this beer was really tasty and paired really well with the spicy barbecue sauce.
