Weyerbacher Whiskey Barrel Aged
I picked up a six-pack of Weyerbacher Whiskey Barrel Aged from the brewery. This beer is one of their one-off Brewer’s Select Series beers. The beer pours a dark brown color with a small bubbly off-white colored head. The aroma consists of whiskey, chocolate, toasted malts, oak, and vanilla. The taste is dry and very biting with a strong whiskey presence on the tongue with a solid dark chocolate based. Some caramel and toasted malts peek through and vanilla and oak come out on the finish. A light sweetness hangs on in the after taste. The alcohol content is 9.0% ABV. The base brown ale to this beer held up amazing against the whiskey barrel aging and blended to make a more than wonderful beer.

Weyerbacher Seventeen
I ordered a bottle of Weyerbacher Seventeen while at Black Gryphon in Elizabethtown, PA for a buddy’s concert. The beer pours a cloudy golden color with a small bubbly white head. The aroma consists of pepper, tart lemon, coriander, and grass. The taste has a light sweetness before a funk sets in. Pepper, tart lemon, grass, hay, barnyard funk, and hints of orange and coriander all blend nicely with this beer. The alcohol content is 10.5% ABV. There was lots going on in this beer but it was fantastic and a really funky saison. I liked it so much that I picked up a four-pack of it at the brewery during the Sour Black release, and i hope it ages well.

Weyerbacher Sour Black
I picked up a couple of bottles of Weyerbacher Sour Black at the release party in Easton. This is a dark American Wild Ale that is aged in the barrels that formerly held Rapture. The beer pours a black color with a lofty and fizzy tan colored head that subsides rather quickly. The aroma consists of raspberry, vinegar, chocolate, toasted malts, and oak. The taste is tart and lightly sour with raspberry and vinegar. The base then shines through with chocolate and toasted malt flavors. A hint of oak comes out in the finish with the bubbly mouth feel. The alcohol content is about 5.0% ABV. This was an interesting and amazing blend of flavors of light fruit tart with a strong chocolate and toasted malt flavor. They worked together better than I expected, and I was pleasantly surprised. I can’t wait to see how this ages.

Weyerbacher Last Chance IPA
I ordered a glass of Weyerbacher Last Chance IPA while at Varga Bar. This beer is intended to help animal rescue organizations with some of the proceeds from its sale. The beer pours a golden color with a frothy white colored head that leaves a thick lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of tangerine, lemon, Pinesol (not a bad thing), caramel, pine, and pepper. The taste is bitter yet very light and delicate on the tongue. There is plenty of lemon, pine, orange, tangerine, and grapefruit that comes along with this beer, and it finishes with pepper on the tongue and a pine after taste. The alcohol content is 5.9% ABV. This was a rather delicious IPA with great bitterness to it and a light body that allowed the hops to completely shine.

Weyerbacher Riserva (2011)
I went to the Weyerbacher Riserva release and picked up a case to bring home. Upon opening the bottle, a mustiness was present on the nose. The beer pours a dark red color with a bubbly off-white colored head that dissipates rather rapidly. The aroma consists of tart raspberries, vinegar, pie crust, sugar, and mustiness. The taste is tart and puckering with plenty of raspberry up front. Vinegar also causing a bit of puckering before a pie crust and sugary sweetness comes out on the finish. Oak and alcohol make a rapid appearance, but cannot be missed. The after taste is slightly funky with an earthy aspect to it. The alcohol content is 11.4% ABV. There was a good compliment of tart raspberries and sugar pie-like crust that made this a great dessert beer with a wonderful puckering punch.

Weyerbacher Insanity
After having a small sample at the Riserva release, I picked up a case of Weyerbacher Insanity to split with friends. The beer pours a red-tinted amber color with a foamy beige colored head that leaves speckles of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of raisin, caramel, fig, and oak. The taste is packed full of caramel, fig, and raisin. Black cherries, vanilla, apples makes the beer largely dimensional. The finish spices up with an alcohol burn and the after taste leaves some dry oakiness behind on the tongue. The alcohol content is 11.1% ABV. Wow, is this beer amazing! The aging in an oak barrel did wonders for this beer and added a great amount of fruit flavors. If you can get your hands on this beer, I highly recommend you do so.

Weyerbacher Hops Infusion
I ordered a glass of Weyerbacher Hops Infusion while at Al’s of Hampden. The beer pours an amber color with a bubbly thin white head. The aroma consists of tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, and caramel, but it is a faint aroma. The taste is bitter with grapefruit and tangerine and hints of lemon. The background has some caramel before pepper kicks in on the finish. The alcohol content is 6.2% ABV. While this beer had some good flavors, it did not blow me away. I would drink it again, but not seek it out or travel specifically for it.

Weyerbacher Rapture
I went to Weyerbacher to pick up a case and split it with my buddy Ed on its release day. The beer pours a a dark cherry color with a filmy off-white colored head. The aroma consists of tart raspberries and cherry, vinegar, biscuits, and sugary fruit filling. The taste is nicely sour with plenty of tart cherry and raspberry. There is a large vinegar pucker to the beer and it has a dry oaky finish with a grape accent. The alcohol content is 6.7% ABV. This is one of the better sour beers that I have had, with its great fruity profile and wonderful vinegar pucker to it. This is the pinnacle of sour beers, and it stands its own against Russian River and Cantillon. Maybe not quite as good, but very close.

Weyerbacher Autumn Fest
I ordered a glass of Weyerbacher Autumn Fest at Al’s of Hampden. The beer pours an amber color with a bubbly beige head. The aroma consists of sweet caramel malts and sour grassy hops, simple but impressive. The taste is smooth and sweet that starts off with plenty of caramel before a sour hop accent kicks in to play. There is grass and pepper on a dry finish. The alcohol content is 5.4% ABV. This was a decent beer with very drying characteristics on the finish, just like an amber ale should be.

Weyerbacher Tiny
While at Bocktown in Pittsburgh, I ordered a bottle of Weyerbacher Tiny. The beer pours a black color with with a bubbly brown head that dissipates rapidly. The aroma consists of dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla, and toasted malts. The taste is sweet and smooth and is like drinking velvet. There are chocolate, toasted malts, vanilla, and caramel notes throughout the experience. The finish is dry with roasted malts. The alcohol content is 11.8% ABV. Tiny was a solid Belgian-style Imperial Stout, as the Belgian yeast provided a nice sweetness underneath the mammothly roasted beer.

Weyerbacher Romeo
While at the Rapture release, my buddy Ed and I decided to split a case of Weyerbacher Romeo. The beer pours a red-tinted amber color with a frothy off-white colored head. The aroma consists of raisin, malts, cherry, fig, and biscuits. The taste is sweet and very malty with plenty of caramel, raisin, and fig. There is a biscuity finish with a slight cherry accent. The alcohol content is 8.0% ABV. I enjoyed this beer and its sweet yeasty flavor with the ever so gentle cherry accent. It fits right into the Belgian Strong Pale Ale category and is a solid example of the style.

Extreme Beer Fest 2011
On Saturday, March 12, 2011, I attended the evening session of Extreme Beer Fest in Boston, Massachusetts. This was my first time at this beer fest, and I have heard many good things. Prior to going, I was a little disappointed that we were not going to Night of the Barrels on Friday night, but after hearing from several reliable people that it was disappointing, I feel much better about not dropping extra dough on that session.
Below you will find some quick tasting notes and impressions that I took from the beers I tried at the event, as well as a few thoughts about the event itself. As with all of my beer fest posts, the notes below do not reflect a full review, but rather a quick snapshot of the beer, and several of these beers I intend to seek out, try again, and complete a full review.
Lost Abbey Cuvee de Tomme- The beer pours a dark borwn color with a sour cherry and vinegar aroma. The taste is big on sour cherry with a puckering vinegar bite. The alcohol content is 11.0% ABV. This is one amazing wild ale that is sour and puckering, but enjoyably so.
Samuel Adams Chocolate Cherry Bock- The beer pours adark brown color with a bubbly tan head. The aroma is similar to cherry candy. The taste starts out malty and chocolate with a light cherry accent, but all together tastes like cough syrup. The alcohol content is probably aligned with the Chocolate Bock, which is 5.8% ABV. The addition of cherry did not bode well for this beer.
Wormtown Cinnamon Girl- The beer pours a red amber color and the aroma is faint but has some malts and cinnamon. The taste is surprisingly floral with cinnamon, light caramel malts, and pepper. The alcohol content is unknown, but I would guess around 6.0% for the amber ale. The cinnamon was somewhat drying, but not prevalent enough for this beer to don its name.
Dogfish Head Kombucha (aka Fungus Tea’mungus)- The beer pours a golden yellow color with a filmy white head. The aroma has plenty of spices, tea, wheat, and lemon. The taste is lightly sour from the tea, lemon, and wheat. The alcohol content is 4.0% ABV. This Beer Advocate/Dogfish Head collaboration was delicious and should be considered a success. Furthermore, the name of the beer went over really well.
Weyerbacher Zombie Monks- The beer pours a golden color with no head. The aroma consists of banana, bourbon, and oak. The taste surprising kept the banana on the front end before lots of bourbon kicks in, warming the mouth and throat. The alcohol content is 9.3% ABV. The 2007 vintage of this triple aged in bourbon barrels was one of my favorite beers of the festival. Mixing bourbon and a triple was much better than I expected and I look forward to more of these hitting the marketplace.
Dark Horse Plead the 5th Imperial Stout- This beer was a sour Russian Imperial Stout, and I was utterly pumped to try it. The beer pours a black color with a thick foamy tan head. The aroma consists of chocolate, coffee, sour cherry, and bourbon. The taste is big and bold (no way of under-exaggerating this) with sour cherry, wood, licorice, molasses, and chocolate. The alcohol content is 12.0% ABV. Another of my top brews from the festival, the addition of the sourness to the Russian Imperial Stout made for a wicked (using the Boston lingo) brew that worked the palate to its fullest.
Dark Horse Super Juice- This was a quadruple IPA that pours a caramel color with a foamy tan head. The aroma consists of pine, grapefruit, and caramel. The taste is sweet with caramel and grapefruit with sugar. The alcohol content is 16.0% ABV. The Super Juice was quite smooth and delicious, with plenty of caramel sweetness balanced with the grapefruit and pine bitterness.
Sierra Nevada Saison de Haricot- One of the more interesting and intriguing brews due to being brewed with jelly beans, this beer pours a peach color with a foamy white head. The aroma is mostly wheat with some pepper accents. The taste is wheat, slightly sweet with cherry, and terrible. The alcohol content is 4.5% ABV. As much as I love Sierra Nevada and saisons, adding jelly beans as the third component was one too many, and this beer missed the mark big time.
Allagash Big Little Beer- This beer pours a pale yellow color with a bubbly white head. The aroma is big on lemon and meringue, which was quite pleasant. The taste is full of lemon and pepper and plenty of hop bitterness. The finish sweetens with the taste of meringue. The alcohol content is 5.5% ABV. While this beer has the typical lemon and pepper flavors, the addition of the meringue is what hooked me to this beer.
Short’s Bloody Beer- One of the breweries on my “must try” list was Short’s. I really wanted to try the Key Lime Pie, but they did not have it. The Bloody Beer was my first try, a beer made with tomatoes. The beer pours an amber color with red hues and has a tomato and peppercorn aroma. The taste is straight on with tomato, salt, peppercorn, and reminded me of a bloody mary. The alcohol content is 8.5% ABV. The Bloody Beer was not bad, but I can’t see myself seeking this beer out again.

The taste is straight on with tomato, salt, peppercorn, and reminded me of a bloody mary. The alcohol content is 8.5% ABV. The Bloody Beer was not bad, but I can’t see myself seeking this beer out again.
Pistachio Cream- Another Short’s Beer I tried was the Pistachio Cream. The beer pours a golden color with no head. The aroma consists of a sugary cream, is sweet, and has some pistachio accents. The taste is likened to cream soda with light pistachio hints. Overall, it is pretty dry and is built on a wheat base. The alcohol content is 5.0% ABV. While not a terrible beer, I am not a huge fan of cream soda, so I wouldn’t be inclined to try this beer again.
Heavy Seas One Eyed Woody (Plank I)- I was excited to preview this beer, the first in the Plank Series. The beer pours a dark amber color with a bubbly head. The aroma is roasted malts and hints of coffee. The taste is smooth with plenty of sweet and toasted malts, and lots of wood. The alcohol content is 8.0% ABV. The difference in this beer with the yellow poplar is that the wood does not take focus, but rather accents the flavors.
Heavy Seas Two Eyed Woody (Plank II)- As a special preview, the Two Eyed Woody could be the beer that becomes Plank II. This beer is a doppelbock and pours a deep brown color with a bubbly head. The aroma consists of caramel and a sweet wood. The taste is smooth and sweet with raisin, caramel, sweet wood, and vanilla. I enjoyed this beer even more so than the Plank I.
Avery Mephistopheles- This beer pours a dark black color with a thin filmy head. The aroma consists of chocolate, coffee, licorice, and molasses. The taste is big and bold and takes over the tongue with chocolate, coffee, molasses and caramel flavors. The alcohol content is 15.1% ABV. I was extremely impressed with this beer and how bold it was, completely using every part of the tongue during the tasting process.
Hill Farmstead Iced Earl- The beer pours a dark brown color with a thin, filmy, tan head. The aroma consists of coffee, chocolate, and caramel. The taste is dry with coffee, milk, and chocolate. The alcohol content is 15.0% ABV. While drinking this beer, you may think that you are at a Starbucks drinking a frappuccino, but with a nice alcohol content.
Cambridge Banryu Ichi- This beer pours an amber color with no head. The aroma consists of sweet grapes and sake. The taste is wheat, malt, sake, alcohol, and apples. The alcohol content is 15% ABV. This was one of the best beers I had at the festival, and the beer/sake blend was quite an intriguing one.
Bobcat Brick Wall Double IPA- The beer pours an amber color, which I thought was pretty light, with a thin filmy white head. The aroma consists of pine, grapefruit, sugar, and tangerine. The taste is bitter with grapefruit, sugar, tangerine, orange, and pine. The alcohol content is 7.8% ABV. Overall the beer had a great bitterness about it and an interesting Sweet Tarts flavor on the finish.
The Bruery Oude Tart- The beer pours a dark amber color with a filmy head. The aroma is sour cherry and a very invasive vinegar. The taste is puckering with vinegar and a sour cherry accent. The alcohol content is 7.5% ABV. The Oude Tart was another of my favorite beers and was extremely flavorful with a good sweet and sour balance.
Hill Farmstead Ephraim- The beer pours a golden with a foamy head. The aroma consists of lemon, pepper and grape. The taste is grapefruit, lemon, pepper, and meringue. The alcohol content is 10.5% ABV. I continue to be impressed with what Hill Farmstead brews, and I will definitely try this beer again.
Dogfish Head World Wide Stout Randallized with Coffee- The beer pours a dark brown color with a foamy tan head. The aroma consists of chocolate, alcohol, and a wonderful compliment of fresh coffee beans. The taste is big on fresh coffee, cream, chocolate, and toasted malts. The alcohol content is 18.0% ABV. I didn’t think I could like the World Wide Stout anymore than I already do, but the Randallized version with coffee was nothing short of amazing.
He’brew Messiah on Rye- The beer pours a golden color with a bubbly white head. The aroma consists of honey, rye, and wheat. The taste is sweet with wheat, honey, and rye, with a pepper finish. This beer had a great spicy rye flavor balanced with a honey sweetness.
As for my thoughts on the Festival itself, I truly enjoyed the format, the crowds, and the venue. While it may have felt a little crowded, the lines never took as long as they looked and the people running the station filled beers rather quickly. I was disappointed in Firestone-Walker, as they only had one beer for the Saturday evening session, and it was gone about halfway through the session. My favorite brewer had to have been Cambridge, and I would like to go back to Boston just to go there and try more of their beers. If you are thinking about attending Extreme Beer FEst in the future, I highly recommend it.

Harrisburg Brewers Fest 2010
I attended Harrisburg Brewers Fest 2010, hosted by Troegs and for the benefit of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. It was an extremely hot day, but cold beers definitely helped the situation. Below are my tasting notes and pictures of the beers to accompany. Keep in mind that with smaller samples and an expedited schedule, my tasting notes a bit more brief than normal. If I get the chance to review these beers again, I will expand on them.
Bullfrog Fran-tastique Saison- The beer pours a cloudy yellow color. The aroma consists of wheat and lemon. The taste follows the aroma with lemon and wheat and nice slight hop bite. The alcohol content is 7.5% ABV. I thought overall that this was a very good saison that was clean and refreshing
Duck-Rabbit Marzen- The beer pours a nice amber color. The aroma is very malty with a slight sour hint. The taste is smooth and malty with great sour hops finishing off the flavor. The alcohol content is not available online.
Smuttynose Barleywine- The beer pours a golden amber color with a bubbly white head. The aroma is malty with a light citrus zest. The taste is malty and bitey (great hops included) with caramel and some orange and spice accents. The alcohol content is 10.0% ABV. This was a great barleywine and I would like to get an entire bottle of it rather than just a taste.
21st Amendment Brew Free or Die IPA- The beer pours a clear yellow color with a bubbly white head. There is a lemon aroma that is pretty faint. The taste is mostly lemon with some light pepper accents. The alcohol content is 7.0% ABV. I thought that this was a tame IPA, making it great to an IPA newbie, but still pretty good and easy drinking.
Market Cross Pub Red Ale- This beer was the winner of the home brew contest that Market Cross held previous to Brewer's Fest and it was available on hand pump. The beer pours an orange amber color with a bubbly white head. There is a nice malty aroma. The taste is malty, smooth, and creamy. There is no alcohol content available online. I thought that the Red Ale was delicious and one of my favorites, if not my favorite, beer of the day.
Erie Presque Isle Pilsner- The beer pours a yellow color with a bubbly white head. There is minimal aroma. The taste is sweet and wheat and overall light bodied. The alcohol content is 4.2% ABV. I thought that this pilsner was pretty decent but not mind blowing. I would definitely order this beer again for its easy drinking on a hot day.
Swashbuckler Mocha Stout- The beer pours a dark black color with a tan bubbly head. The aroma is coffee and chocolate with a bit of cream. The taste is coffee and cream with some good chocolate taste holding together the backbone. There is no alcohol content available online. This beer was excellent and smooth and made my list of great beers for the day. I would make this my second favorite beer of the day behind the Red Ale of Market Cross.
Otto's Pilsner- The beer pours a clear yellow color with a thick bubbly head. The aroma is filled with sour malts. The taste is malty and crisp with a good helping of sour hops. The alcohol content is 5.1% ABV. This pilsner was very refreshing and again is a great choice for a hot summer day.
Weyerbacher Double Simcoe- The beer pours a reddish amber color with a bubbly foamy white head. The aroma is filled with grapefruit, just the way I like my IPAs. The taste is really well balanced with caramel and grapefruit and a sweet sugary finish. The alcohol content is 9%. The Double Simcoe was an extremely delicious beer and I plan on tracking this beer down for home consumption.
Flying Dog Woody Crick White- The beer pours a yellow color and cloudy with a bubbly white head. The aroma is filled with wheat and light hints of lemon. The taste is lemon and wheat. The alcohol content is 4.8% ABV. I thought that this witbier was really good but might have been slightly over-carbonated. However, this is less intrusive on a hot day as the beer is very refreshing.
New Holland El Mole Ocho- The beer pours a dark amber color. There is a chocolate and sour hop aroma. The taste is filled with chili and coffee, but in a great balance. The alcohol content is 8.0% ABV. I was very surprised as to how good this beer was. It was my first experience with a spiced beer and I really enjoyed it.
Thirsty Dog Siberian Night- The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan bubbly head. The aroma consists of coffee, chocolate, and oak. The taste is the same as the aroma, mostly with the coffee and the chocolate. The oak provides a nice finishing touch. The alcohol content is 9.5% ABV. Overall, this beer is very delicious and I enjoyed the oak accents.
Marzoni's Avalanche IPA- The beer pours a dark amber color which was very surprising with a bubbly head. The aroma is filled with grapefruit. The taste consists of toasted malts and grapefruit. The alcohol content is 6.9% ABV. Overall, a decent IPA, as it contained a great bit of grapefruit flavors and the toasted malts gave an interesting but pleasing balance.
