My buddy John picked up a growler of Round Guys BerlinerWeisster-WeissterBerliner from the brewery for Al and I to share. The beer pours a pale yellow color with a bubbly and fizzy white head. The dissipating head makes a sound like Rice Krispies and is very therapeutic. The aroma consists of tart lemon, sour apple, wheat, and a light funk. The taste is tart with lemon on the front end and plenty of acid. It has a solid wheat base and a dry finish that leaves a watery flavor behind. This watery flavor should not be construed as a negative, but just a descriptor of the taste. The alcohol content is 4.8% ABV. I thoroughly enjoyed this Berliner Weiss with a acidic and tart overall composition with light citrus flavors to compliment.

Pizza Boy Brewing Turkey Burglar (Tart Cherry)

On a recent visit to Al’s of Hampden, Al tapped his Pizza Boy Turkey Burglar (Tart Cherry), a Beliner Weiss. The beer pours a lemonade colored yellow color with a thin filmy white head. The aroma is tart with cherry, and lemon, but most interesting is this has an almost urine-like funk to it. The taste is dry and light with a tartness on the tongue. Lemon is prominent, but the cherry is very faint and almost undetectable. The alcohol content is 3.6% ABV. I really liked it, even more so than Dogfish Head Festina Peche. While the aroma may be slightly off-putting, the taste is completely worth it.

Crabtree Berliner Weiss Ale

I received a bottle of Crabtree Berliner Weiss Ale from Lee (Hoptopia) in a beer trade. The beer pours a cloudy yellow color with a bubbly white head that recedes rather rapidly. The aroma consists of funky with horse blanket, hay, barnyard smells, lemon, pepper, and grass. The taste is light bodied with a big sour lemon profile, being slightly puckering. There is a nice background of barnyard funk with grassy hops and a hint of pepper on the finish. The alcohol content is not available online, but I would estimate it to be about 4.5% ABV. I really enjoyed this Berliner Weiss and it’s slight puckering flavor, without being too sour for the style.
