Iron Hill Grandma Drum's Wee Heavy

On a recent visit to Iron Hill Lancaster, I ordered a glass of Grandma Drum’s Wee Heavy. The beer pours an amber color with a frothy beige colored head. The aroma consists of caramel, raisin, and scotch. The taste is smooth but spicy with caramel, raisin, and fig on the front end. There is a scotch alcohol bite and a smooth and sweet finish that leaves a pepper and spice after taste. The alcohol content is 8.3% ABV. This was a nice and easy drinking Wee Heavy that did have a little bit of an alcohol bite. Overall it was quite enjoyable and I’d have another one.

Samuel Adams Wee Heavy

While on a bar tour of Harrisburg, I ordered a glass of Samuel Adams Wee Heavy at McGrath’s. The beer pours a black color with a thin filmy off-white head. The aroma consists of malts, raisin, caramel, and oak. The taste is sweet, malty, and bold with lots of raisin and caramel. There is an alcohol bite mixed in with some oak on the finish. The alcohol content is 10.0% ABV. I thought this was an excellent Wee Heavy, but was somewhat sweet. Just beware of the alcohol content when drinking the beer.

Mad Fox Wee Heavy

While in DC for the United-Union match, my friend Ryan enticed me to stay in the area and hit up Mad Fox Brewery for dinner. The first beer I ordered from them was a Wee Heavy. The beer pours a black color with a thin bubbly tan head. The aroma consists of chocolate with oak and alcohol. The taste is chocolaty with caramel and was very smooth drinking. There were hints of oak and hops with plums rounding out the flavor and a good alcohol bite on the finish. The alcohol content is 8.6% ABV. The Wee Heavy was a very delicious brew and a great start to dinner. The caramel and chocolate played very nicely with the plums and alcohol.
