Mud Hound Brewing Company Barrel Aged Oatmeal Stout

I was given a bottle of Mud Hound Brewing Company Barrel Aged Oatmeal Stout by one of the brewers . The beer pours a black color with a very lofty and frothy tan colored head that leaves specks of lacing on the glass as it subsides. The aroma consists of oat, milk, toasted malts, oak, whiskey, rye, vanilla, and lots of caramel. The taste is dry but smooth and has milk, cherry, chocolate, vanilla, and toasted malt flavors on the front end. It dries out even further on the finish with whiskey, rye, and oak. The alcohol content is 6.5% ABV. This beer played very nicely balancing the smooth and sweet flavors with the dry and oaky flavors, all combining to make a rather complex and enjoyable beer.

Selin's Grove Brewing Shade Mountain Oatmeal Stout

The final beer I ordered at Selin’s Grove Brewing Company on The Beer Circle Central PA Beer Tour was the Shade Mountain Oatmeal Stout. The beer pours a dark brown color with a creamy off-white colored head. The aroma consists of toasted malts, molasses, chocolate, and milk. The taste is dry and chocolaty with toasted malts, roasted flavor, and a bitter hop finish. The alcohol content is 4.8% ABV. While this beer has a great focus on chocolate and molasses, the bitter hop finish is what makes this beer an excellent one. The milky accents as well make it very easy to drink and quite tasty.

Mountain State Miner's Daughter Oatmeal Stout

I ordered a glass of Mountain State Brewing Miner’s Daughter Oatmeal Stout while at the brewpub in Deep Creek Lake, MD. The beer pours a dark brown color with a thin bubbly tan head. The aroma consists of toasted malts and caramel, but isn’t very strong or complex. While the aroma lacks, the taste makes up for it. The taste is sweet at first with oatmeal and chocolate before transitioning into toasted malts. A milky finish accompanies the beer as well. The alcohol content is 5.2% ABV. This was a decent stout that was best on the finish, as the milk mixed very well with the toasted malt flavors.

Trader Joe's Stockyard Oatmeal Stout

Another beer I received in a beer trade with the Beer Club 4 Men was Trader Joe’s Stockyard Oatmeal Stout. The beer pours a black color with a frothy tan colored head that leaves a bit of a lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of chocolate, cardboard, warehouse (weird), and toasted malts. The taste has dark chocolate and is a little bitter with toasted malts. There is a bit of a cardboard flavor before a coffee accents comes out on the tongue. The alcohol content is 5.2% ABV. I can’t say I was a huge fan of this beer. I was surprised that it smelled like the warehouse that it came from, and had hints of cardboard.

Boulder Obovoid Oak-Aged Oatmeal Stout

I ordered a glass of Boulder Obovoid Oak-Aged Oatmeal Stout from Geo’s in Latrobe, PA. The beer pours a dark brown color with a frothy beige head. The aroma consists of chocolate, toasted malts, and caramel. The taste is smooth and sweet at the same time with coffee, chocolate, and lots of caramel. Hints of vanilla come out to complement the dry toasty finish that allows some oak notes to peek through. The alcohol content is 8.0% ABV. The smoothness of this beer cannot be underestimated, and the oak accents provide a wonderful accent on the finish.

Wolaver's Oatmeal Stout

I picked up a bottle of Wolaver’s Oatmeal Stout. The beer pours a black color with a frothy beige colored head that leaves some film on the glass. The aroma consists of chocolate, milk, oatmeal, toasted malts, and caramel. The taste is biting with bitter dark chocolate and toasted malts. There is a sweet hint of milk and caramel, but oatmeal really dries out the finish. The alcohol content is 5.9% ABV. This Oatmeal Stout had a nice, rich chocolate flavor with an excellent toasted malt balance.

McAuslan St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout

At Al’s of Hampden, Al tapped McAuslan St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout and suggested we try it. He was experimenting using the Guinness tap cap, and was anxious to see how it was. The beer pours a black color with a creamy tan head, similar is looks to a Guinness. The aroma consists of chocolate and malts, but is very faint. The taste is chocolate and toasted malts with a very pronounced burnt flavor. The beer has a milky smoothness that is creamy with some coffee accents. The alcohol content is 5.0% ABV. I thought this Oatmeal Stout was delicious and different, as it has a large burnt flavor, but still quite sweet and smooth.
