Two Goats Brewing Dirty Shepherd Brown Ale
I also tried a glass of Dirty Shepherd Brown Ale while at Two Goats Brewing in the Finger Lakes. The beer pours a brown color with a frothy tan head. The aroma consists of smoked malts, toast, and caramel. The taste is roasty with toasted malts, hints of coffee and chocolate, and a dry finish that leaves you wanting more. The alcohol content is not posted online, but I would assume it to be about 5.5% ABV. I liked this offering from the brewery with nice roasted flavors and a spicy finish.

Abita Turbodog
Another beer I ordered while at the Abita Brewpub in Abita Springs, LA was Turbodog. The beer pours a dark brown color with a frothy beige head that leaves a film on the glass. The aroma consists of caramel, toasted malts, and strong coffee. The taste is bold with coffee before settling in with some chocolate and a strong toasted malt presence. There is a dry roasted finish as well. The alcohol content is 5.6% ABV. This was a very well done English Brown Ale that had a great coffee presence, tying the chocolate and malt flavors all together nicely.

Captain Lawrence Brown Ale
Another growler that my buddy Tim bought for me at the Captain Lawrence brewery was the Brown Ale. The beer pours a brown color with a frothy off-white colored head with some lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of chocolate, toasted malts, vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar. The taste is smooth and lightly dry with brown sugar, caramel, and chocolate malt flavors. It finishes with a toast flavor and light grassy hops. The aftertaste leaves behind vanilla, yet is pretty dry. The alcohol content is 4.8% ABV. This is a solid performer in the brown ale category and has a nice roasty flavor with great chocolate accents.

Old Schoolhouse Uncle Big's Brown
My buddy Matt brought over a bottle of Old Schoolhouse Uncle Big’s Brown to share with me. The beer pours a dark brown color with a frothy off-white colored head that leaves some lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of toasted malts, caramel, and coffee. The taste is dry and full of roasted malt flavor. There are hints of coffee in the background with a light caramel sweetness on the finish, but it is somewhat subdued. The alcohol content is 6.0% ABV. This was a rather dry brown ale with a decent compliment of coffee flavors. It wasn’t my favorite brown ale, but it was pretty good overall.
