Troegs Scratch 82- Belgian Style Trippel

I picked up a case of Troegs Scratch 82- Belgian Style Trippel from the brewery, a beer brewed with local honey and Westmalle yeast. The beer pours a golden color with a frothy white colored head that leaves lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of banana, Belgian yeast, grass, and spice. The taste is smooth with banana on the front end before a Belgian spice and honey sweetness takes over. The finish dries out a little bit and brings out some spicy and grassy hops. The alcohol content is 8.1% ABV. This trippel was decent, yet not great. The honey added some sweetness, but I think this beer will do very well with some age.

Heavy Seas Yule Tide Belgian Style Tripel Ale

I saw that Al’s of Hampden had bottles of Heavy Seas Yule Tide Belgian Style Tripel Ale, so I decided to pick one up and share amongst friends while watching hockey. The beer pours an orange-tinted amber color with a frothy white head with a faint bit of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of banana, candi sugar, orange peel, pepper, biscuits, and grass. The taste is sweet with banana and yeast flavors, accompanied with candi sugar. A bit of pepper and orange peel dries out the mouth a little bit with a biscuity mouth feel and a grassy after taste is left behind with hints of pepper. The alcohol content is 10.0% ABV. There is a bit of booziness that arrives as the beer warms which, I thought, really helped balance out the sweetness. It may err on the sweet side with a bunch of extra yeast flakes, but for the price, this is a rather good tripel.

Defiant Belgian Style Tripel Ale

I picked up a bottle Defiant Belgian Style Tripel Ale on my last visit to New Jersey. The beer pours a pale, straw yellow color with a bubbly and overly lofty head. The aroma consists of banana with some candisugar and apricot in the background. The taste is very hefty on banana and has a strong pepper kick. The beer finishes with a dryness and the alcohol really punches the back of the throat. The alcohol content is 9.0% ABV. I was surprised as to how light colored the beer was, but it was not short on flavor. The alcohol really kicked into high gear, not being masked at all by the banana or pepper flavors.
