Mikkeller 1000 IBU

I stopped in to Al's of Hampden to order a glass of Mikkeller 1000 IBU. The beer pours an orange amber color with a thick foamy white head. The aroma is very hoppy and is extremely noticeable from a distance (read: table to nose). The taste is hoppy, as expected, and piney with a lemon and caramel base. The alcohol content is 9.6% ABV. Surprisingly, this beer had a good balance and was not overwhelmingly hoppy. I was expecting somewhat of a hop-bomb, but that is not how the beer drinks. It was a little bitter but still a very enjoyable brew.

  1. Jeff,

Still have not had the chance to try anything from the Mikkeller line, and this one is one that I really want to try. It's just been hard to get here in Dallas. But at 1000 IBU and the style that it is, it's surprising that it finish's as smooth and cleanly as you said it does.

There are a few US craft brews that are very similar in that characteristic with their double IPA's or IPA's. I think I Tweeted about it to you but try the Hoopstopid when you get a chance. It's over 1000 IBU's but is far from a "hop bomb". If you get a chance or haven't had it yet, try the Hercules Double IPA from Great Divide. Now that...IS a hop bomb! BUT if you like hops, you'll love it...not to mention the bits of hops floating around in your glass ;)
